3 Steps to Save Money and Save Energy

April 22, 2017

With the Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia heat and humidity, your air conditioner needs all the help it can get. Here are three steps you can take to keep cooling costs as low as possible:

1. Get an Air Conditioner Tuneup

Maintenance is the most effective way to increase AC energy efficiency. Your service technician will clean, calibrate and optimize the unit for high performance during the long, hot days ahead. A good tuneup will also include a visual inspection during which your service technician will identify potential problems that should be corrected. Your service technician will also check your air handler, electrical connections, refrigerant level and condensate line to ensure proper operation. Air handlers can make a big difference in your cooling costs, so it’s especially important that they receive regular maintenance.

2. Stay on Top of AC Filter Replacement

Air conditioner filters trap airborne particles that pollute indoor air and could harm your HVAC. Most filters should be replaced monthly, but you might need to change them more often if you have a multi-pet household. Filters with a high MERV rating can function as air cleaners; the higher the rating, the more allergens the filters will catch. Filters keep your cooling system healthy and help your air conditioner to cool your home as efficiently as possible.

3. Put Ceiling Fans to Good Use

Many homeowners could be saving on cooling costs by cashing in on the benefits of ceiling fans. Fans won’t make the temperature in a room cooler, but the breeze will make you feel cooler, so you can set the thermostat higher. For maximum benefit, the fan should be set to run in a counterclockwise direction at high speed.
