Need Thermostat Upgrade

4 Signs You Need a New Thermostat Right Away

October 12, 2021

Homes in Duval, FL, enjoy warm weather most of the year, but it can feel chilly in winter. If your trusty heating system seems to be malfunctioning, it might be time to replace the thermostat. Here are four telltale signs of a much-needed thermostat upgrade:

HVAC System Turning On and Off

If your HVAC system keeps switching on or off unexpectedly, it may be getting the wrong signal. A thermostat’s primary function is to transmit signals to your HVAC components. If it has frayed wires, they can sever the connection.

Inaccurate Thermostat Reading

If your thermostat outputs the wrong temperatures, we strongly advise replacing it. You can test if it’s producing an accurate reading by using a portable thermometer to generate a separate reading that you can use for comparison. Inaccurate thermostat output is typically caused by a defective or old sensor, and it generally makes sense to replace the entire thing rather than try to repair it.

Higher-Than-Usual Electricity Bill

If your electricity bill suddenly jumped in the past month or so, it may be due to a faulty thermostat. If your HVAC system’s thermostat can’t read the temperatures correctly, it causes your system to run in longer cycles. A higher cycling frequency means more energy consumption and costs over time.

Outdated Model

Finally, if you moved into a home with a thermostat already installed, you may want to check how old it is by contacting an HVAC contractor and scheduling an inspection. Programmable or smart thermostats carry a richer set of features, many of which offer better control over your HVAC unit. The more control you have over your HVAC, including temperature ranges and cycle times, the more efficiently you can run it.
